The 7 Steps to Unlock & Influence Change - that people most often miss
Many assume that influence starts with authority, status or a data-packed presentation. It doesn't. Real influence begins much before you say "Here is what I can do, and here is what you need to do".
The 7 steps that leaders often miss:
1. If you want people to align with your idea, they must first believe in your reason.
2. For them to believe you, they need to trust you.
3. For them to trust you, they must feel connected with you - as a human, not a role.
4. For them to feel connected, they must feel psychologically safe.
5. For them to feel safe, they need to feel understood.
6. For them to feel understood, they need to be genuinely heard.
7. For them to be heard, you must be fully present and listen.
Not listening to react, judge, defend, or fix,
but listening to see their world.
With empathy, understanding and acknowledgement.
Listening is not a soft skill. It is the ignition switch.
It lowers resistance, increases trust, expands thinking, and turns protection into participation.
Because people don’t commit to ideas they don’t feel safe to explore.
They don’t open up to leaders they feel judged by.
And they don’t follow reasoning they don’t feel understood within.
True leadership is not about being bossy or feared.
It is about creating conditions where people can willingly come with you.
So pause and ask yourself:
Am I listening to understand, or listening to react?
When I disagree, do I defend and dismiss? Or do I deepen the dialogue?
Do I listen with curiosity, or with an inner desire to correct?
Do people leave conversations with me feeling safer or smaller?
When people feel heard, they no longer guard their position. They start exploring possibilities.
And that is where all meaningful change begins.
