Twente Medical Optics is a medtech spin-off from the University of Twente developing a handheld, non-invasive imaging device that enables clinicians to assess microcirculation—the network of tiny blood vessels that plays a critical role in tissue survival—in real time.
Supporting clinical decision-making
In reconstructive surgery, surgeons often need to assess whether transplanted or reconstructed tissue has sufficient blood supply to survive. Today, these decisions can be made without objective information about tissue perfusion, potentially contributing to complications, additional surgery and prolonged recovery.
Twente Medical Optics aims to address this challenge by providing real-time visualization of blood flow directly at the point of care. By turning microcirculation from something that is largely assessed through clinical judgement into an objectively measurable parameter, the technology could support more informed surgical decisions and more predictable healing.
A platform with broader applications
The company is developing its technology as a platform that could potentially be applied across multiple areas of healthcare. Beyond reconstructive surgery, potential applications include wound care, diabetic foot management and gastrointestinal surgery.
If successfully developed and adopted, objective microcirculation measurement could therefore have applications across a range of clinical settings where tissue perfusion and blood flow are important to patient outcomes.
